Thief Town

Do you ever wish you had more games to play with your friends when they come over? Well look no further! Grab a friend, grab a PS4, Xbox One, PC, or even a phone, and get ready to play Thief Town!

The mechanics of the game are what make it stand out above other games like it. The controls to move are extremely simple: you can move in any cardinal direction and diagonals. Other actions include stabbing and an action button (depending on the game type). The player can move around in a 2.5 pixelated space to try to find the other players and eliminate them.

The main aim of the game is to find the other players. This task is actually harder than it sounds, due to the design choices. When you start a match, there are 10-20 characters on screen. Each player is one of those characters, and they have to move around to figure out which one they are. From there, players have to figure out which other characters on the map are their friends and stab them, all without alarming them. The point of the game is to reach 20.

As for variety when playing, the game offers multiple different gameplay styles. There is a power-up version of the game, called Spy Town, that randomly gives players items for each match. These items include a bomb that will blow up if another player walks over it, a mug that will make all the other players docile for a small amount of time, a gun that allows the player to shoot one bullet directionally left or right in hopes of taking out someone, a smokescreen that you can hide behind to kill someone, a decoy that switches you with another random character on the map, and a ring that reveals players in it when placed. Like classic mode, the point is to kill the most and get to 20 points the fastest. The other game mode, besides classic, is called Drunk Town. This game mode makes one of the players a sheriff. The rest of the other players cannot attack. Instead, they have to try to run away from the sheriff while he uses the gun power-up to take down players. To win as one of the ‘drunk’ people, you have to avoid the sheriff for the 25 seconds in the round.

Besides variety, the game has a few different little things that add to the experience. One example is the ability to parry. If you can stab at the same time as the other player, you will block his stab with your knife. If you both kill each other, you will then finish the round, and go into a standoff where you have to kill each other. This also happens when two players are tied.

There is, however, a downside to the game that make it less than perfect. Besides the three game modes, there is nothing else to do. Once you have gone through the few game modes more than a couple times, the game can become boring and repetitive. Now three games is a lot, but the game can seem very repetitive after only a few matches, even with the variety of power-ups. While this is a blaring downside, the competition and intensity of each round break up the monotony of the game.

The reason this game is on the list is because it is a go-to for me and my friends. There are always different ways to play the game, and there is always intense competition whenever my friends and I play. This game has been in my roster for a long time and will remain there because it is completely different from anything that people normally play. It brings something new to gamers’ lineups. The game is exceedingly easy to learn since there are only two or three controls on any platform that you would play on. Thief Town is one of the best $8.00 that anyone looking to compete with their friends should spend. So grab your friends and get ready for a Western showdown in Thief Town.
