Mario Kart 64 is a go-kart racing game created in 1996, and released by Nintendo in 1997. It is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time, so it is only fair that it is regarded as one of the best sports video games of all time as well. Mario Kart 64 was created for the Nintendo 64, hence the title. Mario Kart 64 is the second of many Mario Kart games to be created and only added to the hype of all the previous Mario games in the series. The first Mario Kart game to be released was Super Mario Kart, which had good reviews, but nothing like Mario Kart 64’s. The game features all the classic Mario characters people have grown to love. There are four different game modes players can enjoy. Mario Kart 64 will forever be a fan favorite, especially because of how much fun it is to play with friends.
This game is one many have grown up to love for many reasons, and the endlessly entertaining game modes are one of them. There are four different game modes to choose from: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, and Battle. Grand Prix is the most popular of the four, and lets you pick four different tracks to race on. You can either pick random tracks or you can pick a specific cup. Depending on what place you finish, you are assigned points. The player with the most points in the end is the one who wins the Grand Prix. There is also an unlockable mirror mode that lets you play the tracks backwards.
Another fun mode you can play is time trial. Although this is only a single player mode, it is still fun to play. This game mode allows players to race the tracks by themselves and try to record the fastest time for each track. This mode is fun if you are playing by yourself. Versus mode is another popular mode, in which people can play single tracks against other players. This is for two to four players, and allows players to select the tracks that they want to play.
The last game mode is Battle. This is also a two to four-person feature. Each player in Battle starts with three balloons. The goal is to try to shoot shells, lay bananas, or run into opponents to make them lose all their balloons. The last one with any balloons left is the winner. This is another popular mode among multiplayer fans. These different game modes make the game what it is, and are why it is so much fun to play with others.
Another thing that makes this game so fun are the characters you can play with. Mario Kart 64 features all the classic characters : Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Wario, and Donkey Kong. Wario and Donkey Kong replaced Donkey Kong Jr. and Koopa Troopa from Super Mario Kart. These characters got separated into three categories, being lightweights, heavyweights, and middleweights. Each category has a characteristic that can give them edge of some sort. Lightweights have the top acceleration, heavyweights have high top speeds and the ability to knock around other characters, while middleweights have normal top speed and normal acceleration, acting as a balance between the other two.
Mario Kart 64 did a lot for the future of Mario Kart and Mario games in general. The great Mario Kart games that followed were heavily influenced by everything done in Mario Kart 64. Mario Kart Double Dash and Mario Kart Wii are prime examples of this. Mario Kart Double Dash is a lot like Mario Kart 64, but with the added function of someone on the back of your kart that you can switch to. Mario Kart Wii is also similar to Mario Kart 64, but was made for the Wii console. Mario Kart Wii almost feels like a more in-depth version of Mario Kart 64, but with better graphics. The game had many of the same characters, game modes, and tracks that everyone loved playing on Mario Kart 64.
Mario Kart 64 is one of the best sports games and best video games of all time. This is due in large part to the game modes, characters, and the influence it had on future Mario and Mario Kart games. This game will leave you and your friends playing for hours to see who is the best.
